This paper discusses the application of the historiographical category translatio studiorum to the compilation of American philosophical and theological production designated as scholastica americana, and substantiates this expression – by highlighting specific content that puts it in a historiographical category. The article analyses some characteristics of this production in the colonial period, establishing its geographical, chronological, thematic and institutional delimitation. The characterization of the production is justified for the following periods: 1. Scholastic; 2. Eclectic pre-Enlightenment; and 3. Enlightenment.Walter Redmond’s (...) thesis of the double translatio of logic is also discussed – a thesis equally applicable to other philosophical disciplines. The epistemological and methodological justification of the historiographical category scholastica colonialis americana includes the following topics: an unusual process within the general category; its problematic context; the consideration of the American philosophical ‘tradition’ as translatio americana; and its connexion with the scholastica americana as being understood in recent historiography. As is well known, in his Summa theologiae Thomas Aquinas defends from an Aristotelian perspective the scientific nature of sacra doctrina, arguing that it is a science that is subaltern to the knowledge that God has of Himself. Thomas’ interpretation of the Aristotelian doctrine on science allows him to argue that the conclusions of sacra doctrina are reducible to the articles of the faith as to its first principles. What is not well known, however, is that St. Thomas (...) in other texts modifies his view on the way in which sacra doctrinafulfills the requirements for a science. This has been made evident in part by certain recent critical editions, such as Boyle›s edition of the Lectura Romana, and especially by Oliva’s edition of the prologue to the Commentary on the Sentences. Although the articles of the faith are evident in themselves, these texts, seen chronologically, show that throughout his career Aquinas hesitates in acknowledging that from our perspective the articles of the faith are neither evident nor demonstrable, but are objects of religious faith. Throughout these texts Aquinas progressively admits that there exists an imperfection in the mode in which we know sacra doctrina in this life ; therefore, sacra doctrina in a certain way falls short of the perfect ratio of science, at least quoad nos. Aquinas’s characterization of sacra doctrina has received sustained engagement addressing its relation to contemporary conceptions of theology and Aristotelian conceptions of science. More recently, attention has been paid to Aquinas’s neo-Platonist influences, and the way they lead him to subvert purely Aristotelian categories. I therefore combine these themes by introducing the first study of whether sacra doctrina counts as a technê in Plato’s sense. After examining how Platonic technê relate to their ergon. epistasthai, gignôskein, and epistêmê and examining (...) sacra doctrina’s relationship to each of these Platonic categories, I suggest that sacra doctrina is an unqualified Platonic technê. “Sacra à Deo in corde discenda, natura ex natura.” Johann Christian Senckenberg's Observationes as a Medico-Theological Writing Method. In his early diaries, the pietist physician Johann Christian Senckenberg has taken down large amounts of observation data which mostly concentrated on his own body and soul. Earlier research has mistaken his diligent self-observation for hypochondria and unworldliness, especially since the author had never endeavoured to analyze and publish his work. The article shows that both his writing practice and his reluctance (...) to process and share its results are due to his deeply religious and firmly anti-rationalist conviction. The main purpose of his journal keeping was the attainment of religious self-knowledge and professional self-perfection. Scientific publications he considered to be hypothetical and dogmatic, be it in theology or medicine; moreover, their authors were often enough driven by their self-love and desire for fame. In his eyes, the only godly way of knowledge acquisition was the humble, diligent and minute study of divine creation according to the Hippocratic method. The most immediate and reliable way of achieving true wisdom, however, was the observation of God's work within one's own body and mind, which were subject to the effects of God's grace and punishment as well as to atmospheric, environmental and dietetic circumstances. This document has a historical background, where both applied experience and inspiration meet. The main contributors were Ignace of Loyola, through his permanently examined and shared experience: Jerome Nadal. who many considered the second founder of the Jesuits, because of his commitment and success in the foundation of colleges for non-jesuit students: Claudio Aquaviva, who promoted and coordinated the work that led to unify the many contributions. The Roman College played also a main role in this difficult process through a permanent attention and reflection. It is in the Spiritual Exercises, which reflect the pilgrimage of Ignace and his companions, that we can find both the inspiration and the method, which was also influenced by the pedagogy of the so called "modus parisiensis". Jesuit colleges and universities located in the United States in recent years have undergone profound changes. They have expanded their mission to embrace many nonCatholic students and faculty and in doing so they find themselves competing for these students with hundreds of other institutions. In seeking to appeal to this wider group of students these Jesuit schools in many cases have abandoned not merely the formal specifics of the curriculum outlined in the Ratio Studiorum but have also decreased the (...) emphasis on spiritual formation that is the reason for the existence of the Ratio. This essay does not argue for a literal return to the Ratio but for an open dialogue centering on questions of inculturation to the larger secularized academic community. It also raises the question of how faculty who have little knowledge of the Ratio can be brought into a conversation about its values. /// Os colégios e universidades dos jesuitas nos Estados Unidos sofreram em anos recentes profundas transformações. Expandiram a sua missão até abrangerem muitos estudantes e professores não Católicos e, ao procederem assim. encontraram-se a competir por estes estudantes com centenas de outras instituições. Em muitos casos. ao procurarem atrair um mais vasto numero de estudantes, estas escolas jesuiticas não apenas abandonaram os aspectos formais do curriculo contido na Ratio Studiorum. como também reduziram a importância da formação espiritual. a qual constitui a razão de ser da própria Ratio. The paper aims to provide an updated biography of Benet Perera in the historical background of the early years of the Collegio Romano. As one of the first teachers at the Collegio Romano, Benet Perera played a significant role in the debate on the different drafts of the Constitutiones and the Rationes studiorum of the Jesuit order, often generating criticisms among his colleagues and brothers in the faith. Debating on disciplines and methods of teaching, these discussions involved some crucial (...) topics from an epistemological point of view: mainly concerning the scientific status and role of metaphysics. In questo articolo rifletto sulla nascita della grammatica araba e il suo sviluppo come fonte dell’esegesi coranica dall’VIII al XIV secolo. Il legame tra esegesi e grammatica è stato oggetto di diversi studi che esaminano le origini delle categorie grammaticali. Sebbene non ci sia evidenza di uno spiccato interesse per la grammatica da parte degli esegeti coranici, essi hanno comunque dovuto adoperarla per spiegare i significati del testo sacro. In particolare, nei commentari classici è data particolare attenzione alla lessicografia e (...) meno alla struttura grammaticale. A ogni modo, in alcuni passaggi, anche se sporadici, le categorie grammaticali stesse fungono da spiegazione, essendo portatrici di significati. Questo si evince dalla letteratura sufi dove le terminologie della grammatica araba sono simboli delle stazioni dell’anima nel cammino spirituale, come nella _Grammatica dei cuori_ di al-Qushayrī. In questo articolo, analizzo il ruolo della grammatica nelle Scienze Coraniche secondo il teologo al-Ghazālī e dopo una panoramica della storia della disciplina nel periodo classico della storia islamica, e evidenzio il modo in cui le terminologie grammaticali servono per la comprensione profonda del significato nella Sūra al-Fātiha nel commentario sunnita di Ibn Kathīr. In this article I reflect on the emergence of Arabic grammar and its development as a source for Qur’ān exegesis from VIII to XIV century. The connection between exegesis and grammar has been the subject of several studies examining the origin of grammatical categories. Although there is no evidence of a clear interest for grammar by Qur’ān exegetes, they necessarily used it to explain the meanings of the sacred text. In particular, in the classical commentaries there is a particular attention to lexicography and less to the grammatical structure. However, in some passages, even if sporadic, the grammatical categories themselves perform an explanatory function, being bearers of meanings. This is manifest in Sufi literature where Arabic grammar terminologies are symbols of the stations of souls in the spiritual path, like in the _Grammar of the heart_ by al-Qushayrī. In this article, I analyse the status of grammar in Quranic Sciences according to the theologian al-Ghazālī and after an overview on the history of the discipline in the classical period of Islamic History, and I highlight the way grammar terminologies serve as a key to understand profound meaning in sura al-Fātiha in Ibn Kathīr’s sunni commentary. The forces of reason and revelation, sometimes intimately intertwined, sometimes diametrically opposed, formed the leitmotif of medieval metaphysics. Utilizing the classic theories of Chenu and Gilson, Persson examines the harmonious balance between ratio and revelatio in the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas. Basing his highly detailed analysis directly on the Summa Theologica, he ultimately shows how reason provided the systematizing impetus while revelation primarily determined the content of Thomistic thought. Examined are the subjects of divine love, causality, grace, and redemption--all of (...) which compose the formative elements of sacra doctrina. The author presents Thomas primarily as a theologian on whom the major influence was Scripture, not the patristics or Aristotle. When compared to the latter, however, Aquinas emerges as a revolutionary, breaking with traditions which undermined his thought. The author's thesis and methodology should be thought-provoking to both conservative and radical Thomists.--J. B. (shrink)

During the century following the Council of Trent, two trends within Catholic religious orders matured: the first consisted in unifying and strengthening the Order’s culture by focussing on one author of reference; the other in elaborating a new way of presenting that author’s doctrines. In the case of the Friars Minor Conventuals, these trends were fostered in the second decade of the seventeenth century by the minister general of the Order, Giacomo Montanari, who promoted the idea that providing the Order (...) with new works featuring innovative didactic characteristics and a renewed defence of the doctrines of John Duns Scotus was a prime way to lead an authentic religious life. Bartolomeo Mastri and Bonaventura Belluto’s “philosophiae cursus ad mentem Scoti” was probably the major result of this impulse. This essay examines the ways in which this process occurred and the outcomes to which it led. (shrink)
